New Mom To Be Checklist: What You Need To Do Before Pregnancy

Trying For A Baby?

I always knew I wanted kids. My husband, being 1 of 5 siblings also knew he wanted kids. What the heck were we thinking?! The end. Kidding! Trying for a baby can be a really fun experience, but all jokes aside, there are some things you need to do before conceiving.

The Reality Of Having a Baby

Are You Ready For a Baby?

Allow me to step in here for a moment***warning***making a baby can be super fun. Having and raising a baby though, is the hardest job I have ever had. To say I was clueless about what being a mom would entail would be an understatement.

You can read the books and watch the TV shows, but it really is nothing like the real thing. As a new Mom, you will experience some of the strongest emotions you can feel. The love that you have for this little crying ball of wrinkles is indescribable. There really are no words. Your baby makes your heart explode with feelings of protective, unconditional and fierce love.

One the flip side, you will never worry more or cry more. You will never feel more overwhelmed as you do when you are a first time mom.

OK, back to the baby making....

When my husband and I found out we were expecting, we felt happy...and scared, and joyful...and terrified. It is, and will always be, the best thing that has ever happened to us.

I knew that our marriage was built on a solid foundation, and we were going to be good at this whole baby thing. My Dad was a great role model for me to follow when it came to teaching manners and discipline, so I knew I could lean on him for guidance.

What We Did Before Trying: The Pre-Pregnancy Checklist

1. Met with my doctor

Was I healthy? Was I going through any major life changes? How was my mental state? How should I prepare my body?

2. Traveled

It’s true - if you have a bucket list of destinations, it will most likely be a few years before you will want to travel with your kids. So get any major travel plans out of the way before trying to conceive.

3. Connected with my husband

I knew from the time we met that he would be the father of my kids, but I wanted to make sure we both knew what to expect. Were we ready for sleepless nights, expenses, and a complete life change?

4. Started prenatal vitamins

That’s right, you want to start these a good few months before you try and get pregnant. I liked this brand First Response, which can be found on my Baby Store page.

5. I checked in with myself

Was I ready to put the brakes on my career for at least a year? Did I have a good support system for when the baby came?

These are all things we considered before I went off of the birth control pill.

It is hard to say if you will ever feel 100% ready to try for a baby. You can always have more money, a larger house etc. But if you and your partner feel like you are relatively stable, healthy and ready for this new chapter, go for it. As I mentioned earlier, you really have no clue what being a mom will feel like until you are one. You cannot predict how it will turn out or how you will feel.
