Baby The First Year: What To Do All Day?! Milestone Tips 0 to 6 Months

What To Do With Baby All Day: 0-6 Months

Babies are quite simple creatures when it comes to their daily routine. However, the new mom tends to overthink her every move with her new baby. Is she/he bored? Am I doing enough with him/her? What does baby do all day!?

Sound familiar?

A baby’s day is divided into 3 parts.

1. Eating

2. Sleeping

3. Awake time

Simple right?

Read this: The purpose of this article is to remind you that these are the simple days. If you are like me, you may be a nervous, worry-filled anxiety wreck right now. I know, you love your baby and want to do everything you can to make sure they reach milestones. But before the ABCs, the hide and seek, the constant physical activity and the busy, busy, busy, go-go-go attitude of a toddler, just please, for your own sake, keep this time simple.

As for milestones (even the ones listed below) remember that each baby is so different. My son was very late to sit up and to crawl. I hated hearing the words “milestones”. The mention of them would cause me to sweat. Listen to your baby's doctor for development information, and go with your gut. So breath, you amazing mommy, and remember: keep it simple!

So what do we do during the awake time?

Here is a list of ideas of what to do with your baby, by age.

Newborn to 1 month

Awake time:

-Skin to Skin: you and baby get in your birthday suits and hold each other oh so lovingly. it is said that one of the most important bonding experience is skin to skin.

It familiarizes baby with your smell and reminds baby of being in the womb from the sound of your heart beat. For you, it helps milk production and the contracting of your uterus back to its normal size. It is also really relaxing and soothing for both of you.

-Talk to your baby: make silly faces, sing and talk to your baby. They love your voice and remember it from the womb. Also show them some black and white images from baby books.

-Carry them around: Baby wear while you get stuff done around the house or grocery shop. My favorite comfortable baby carriers are in the Baby Store.

-Stroller walk: get some fresh air and enjoy the vitamin D. Just remember to keep your newborn shaded at all times.

-Milestone exercise: Tummy time! Just minutes here and there to help baby strengthen those back and neck muscles. Try tummy time several times a day.

That’s it! Keep it simple. These months are for loving each other up and resting while you can! Do not, I repeat, do not feel guilty for turning on Netflix and snoozing on the couch in between mom-ing sessions!

Baby Must Have Products

Baby at 2-3 months:

MAJOR MILESTONES: starts to smile, following people or objects with eyes, gets stronger during tummy time and may start moving head side to side or pushing up, Babbling, looking towards noises.

Awake time:

-Tummy time: It is important to aim for 30 mins (in little 5 minute increments) of tummy time a day. This strengthens your babies muscles and helps their little bodies develop. Try it on your chest face to face or on a mat on the floor.

Another important part of tummy time that I wish someone mentioned to me is to just plain keep them off of the back of their heads.

Spending too much time laying on their backs can cause their skulls to flatten in certain spots. This is where the baby moon pillow comes in. Click it on my Baby Store page and research it a bit. Trust me you will not regret it. Use it for naps, car seat rides and in the swing to avoid flat head along with lots of tummy time.

Tummy Time Baby

-Interact: sing, chat, make more faces. Entertain your baby by simple interaction. Do tons of goofy things to get that perfect smile!

-Practice rolling over: practice makes perfect! Show them how. Get the dog involved. Get on the floor and help them with your hands and then celebrate when they roll over.

-Activity mat: play with things that light up, things they can try to grab or pull, and things with reflective surfaces.

-Continue baby wearing: leave the house and get baby used to being around other people. Go for a walk around the mall or run some errands.

-Milestone exercises: help your baby follow you by moving his/her head! Over here on the right! Now over here on the left!

Remember, each baby is different. They are going to master different skills at different times. Enjoy this time!

What to do with baby all day

Baby at 4-6 Months

MAJOR MILESTONES: sitting independently, knows his/her name, rolling from tummy to back, explores toys by mouthing them, giggling, tries to ‘creep’ around the floor.

Awake time:

-Keep practicing: tummy time, grasping for objects, copying facial expressions, sitting up supported, rolling over, etc.

-Play! Blow bubbles, play peekaboo or hide objects under blankets (within their reach) and watch them dig to find it.

-Read books: get simple books with animals and make animal noises. Tell them about shapes or colours. My sons favourite book was a very simple board book with animal faces. You make the animal sound while holding the book up to your face. Keep it simple!

-Milestone exercise: hand eye coordination. Work on passing objects from one hand to another and back and forth. Also, during tummy time try to put an object just outside of their reach to encourage crawling.
