New Mom To Be: The Most Annoying But Common Pregnancy Symptoms

Strange But Common Pregnancy Symptoms

Oh I love me some weird pregnancy symptoms! My favorite question to ask when someone is pregnant is if they had any strange symptoms. I find it fascinating how each pregnancy is so different! Our bodies are amazing, and how they each react differently to the unpredictable journey of pregnancy is equally amazing.

Common Pregnancy Symptoms

7 Pregnancy Symptoms That Are Common But Cool

1. Not Looking Pregnant

Women of all different shapes and sizes can turn out, well, all different shapes and sizes! Sometimes though, you may not show as early as you expected to. That adorable little baby bump may be in hiding while you wait anxiously for people to start opening doors for you and offering to carry your groceries.

As a first time mom, I carried very small. I showed up at a wedding, already limping from the pregnancy hip pain and feeling like a beached whale just to find out that no one could tell I was even pregnant! Maybe I just looked drunk?

The average baby bump shows between 12 - 16 weeks, but if you carry small, you may not show until you are 5 months pregnant! The good news is, once you find out you are pregnant just feel free to let all of those stomach muscles lose - now is the time to be bloated and proud!

2. Weird Food Aversions

Yuck! Can you smell that? Many pregnant women have some kind of food aversion. They may smell uncooked steak or ground beef and feel completely turned off.

This is caused by the super sense of smell that comes along with being a pregnant superwoman. Some studies claim that pregnant women can smell spoiled food from quite a distance before anyone else can!

To battle this sometimes annoying pregnancy symptom, drink mint herbal tea to settle your stomach or apply some diluted essential oils to the outer rim of your nose.

3. Can I Have Some Dirt With That?

On the flip side of food aversions, many pregnant women have some strange cravings for things they wouldn't normally find appetizing.

As mentioned in my pregnancy article, I craved dirt. That's right, I wanted good old grade school sandbox dirt. This is actually called 'Pica' and it is defined as craving substances with little or no nutritional value. As weird as it sounds, to soothe this craving I ate a ton of mushrooms that I may or may not have washed...kidding! But I sure did love my mushrooms.

4. Crying At Commercials

Maybe this is a woman thing in general, but for pregnant women some commercials just hit that spot. This is of course is caused by all those hormones being out of whack.

A friend of mine once told me a story about her husband making her soup during her 3rd trimester. Nice right? He placed the bowl of soup in front of her and she looked down at it and completely lost it. Tears streaming she said to her husband, "The bowl just isn't full enough. I wanted more soup!" Her husband thought she was nuts, but us moms know that it is just normal pregnancy hormones! P.S. Avoid watching kitten toilet paper commercials without some tissues handy!

5. Alien Vagina

Alien what!? Your lady parts can do all sorts of funky things when you are pregnant. Discharge, swell, spot, develop varicose veins, you name it. You may want to make the unfortunate switch to granny panties during this time and keep some pantyliners handy.

What I call 'Alien Vagina' can be caused by many things. One is the increase in blood flow. This can cause your vagina to swell or even turn a blue / purple colour. This is not cause for concern, however if you are in discomfort or feeling numb, please double check with your doctor.

6. It Hurts Where?

When you imagine being pregnant for the first time, do you picture a movie scene with the warm summer breeze blowing through your hair while you lovingly stroke that baby belly? Now that you are pregnant are you actually popping Tylenol and bent over the toilet every morning?

Pregnancy is a wonderful thing, and hopefully its symptoms are kind to you. It can however, hurt. Most body aches are cause by a hormone called Relaxin. It is produced by the ovary and meant to relax the uterine walls for the growing placenta and baby within. It also relaxes the blood vessels to increase flow to the placenta. This is a good thing. But it also can cause the ligaments around your back and hips to loosen, causing you pain with regular physical activity.

7. A Kick In The Butt

Sounds fun doesn't it! This pregnancy delight was one of my favourites. Just as I would finally settle down in a comfortable position to fall asleep...WHAM! Baby would kick me in what felt like my #2 Zone. The first few times it happened I thought maybe I should sit on the toilet? Maybe I needed more fiber? But as a first time mom, you do not know what to expect when baby starts kicking and moving around in there.

Some of these movements can feel very strange. In the beginning they may feel like a little "pop!" here and there, but near the end it can be an all out MMA Fighter match inside your rib cage.

When To See A Doctor During Pregnancy?

If you experience any of these symptoms during pregnancy, check in with your doctor...

- sudden swelling of the hands, face or feet (preeclampsia)

- more blood than just spotting coming from the vagina

- pass uterine tissue or large amounts of fluid from the vagina

- too nauseous to hold fluids / start to feel weak with blurred vision
